Journey Homeschool Academy for Science

  • You, the parent, don’t have to be the expert: The instructors, Luke and Trisha Gilkerson, will do all the teaching for you (via video).
  • It’s integrative: the courses include integration with history, literature, and even the Bible.
  • It’s interactive: in astronomy, your student will get outside on a weekly basis to take notes or draw specific observations in the sky; in biology and chemistry they’ll conduct several lab experiments each month—something that used to be reserved only for kids in classrooms. And in Earth Science they’ll get their hands dirty exploring rocks, minerals, earthquakes, and more!
  • From the comfort of home: all the required activities can be done online + in your home.
  • Christian emphasis: the subject of science is studied through a Christian worldview. In Biology, the courses help students think critically about how the Bible and science address evolutionary theory, which they’ll encounter throughout their lives.

Sure, you could throw a boring textbook at your kids this year.

…but when you sign up for Journey’s science courses, you’ll be fostering a love of science and encouraging them to explore the subject in a fresh, exciting way. This is solid science education developed by—and for—homeschoolers.

Students will complete projects to put into practice what they are learning, such as making an exercise plan or creating a poster to discourage smoking.

Students will learn that they have the autonomy to make personal health choices, but those decisions have consequences. Students are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their health in a proactive way.

The course emphasizes research and experimental design, with students completing a year-long project. Hands-on labs are available for certain units. The course is flexible, allowing students to tailor their learning experience.

Chemistry - The course includes a blend of lectures, videos, virtual and hands-on labs, and interactive simulations. Weekly assignments help students understand and practice chemistry concepts, and lab activities utilize easily obtainable supplies.

Forensic Science - This class introduces students to the application of biology, chemistry, and physics in solving crimes. Topics include fingerprinting, biological evidence, ballistics, toxicology, and forensic entomology, along with case studies of real crimes. The course features a mix of online lessons, virtual and hands-on labs, and weekly assignments. Designed for grades 10-12, it requires a Biology prerequisite

Earth Science - This is an Honors level course covering rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy. Designed for motivated students, it includes labs and hands-on activities.

Ecology - This class explores relationships between living organisms and their environments. It covers ecosystems, population dynamics, biomes, climate, energy flow, and sustainability. The course includes weekly case studies, labs using household items, and hands-on activities.

Please note:

  • Students don't have to be in the classroom at a specific time nor do they have live sessions. There are weekly deadlines for assignments and all work is graded and feedback provided.
  • Our classes are designed for students who plan to attend college ie they are reasonably rigorous and will provide a good foundation for science classes at college.
  • Our classes also aim to be relevant and so the material taught is constantly linked to current events so that students can understand why they are learning the topics in each module
  • Our classes are worldview neutral and students of all faiths, as well as secular students, should feel comfortable in them.
